cover songs?

Postby pringa on Mon Nov 19, 2007 11:57 pm

what do you think of bands recording cover songs, and in particular re-arranging them to another style?

i prefer different versions or interpretations to carbon copies, and i thought the "renegades" album by ratm was pretty sweet.

i guess it depends how commercial the cover is as well

I always prefer it when a band stamps a bit of it's identity on a cover song, and the Renegades album is a good example of that.

People have complimented my band on our cover of Welcome Home (Sanitarium), as rather than just belt out a straight up cover, we make it a bit more our own.

One of the advantages of horses that people sometimes point out, is that they very seldom explode. Almost never, in my experience, apart from that unfortunate occurence in the hot summer a few years ago.

I'll edit it when I get home, I can't get youtube at work, so can't do a straight link!

Between the Buried and Me did a whole cover album called The Anatomy Of. It was a cd of covers they did of bands that highly influenced them. My fave off of it would be their cover of Queens Bicycle Race.

Anyone hear Biffy Clyros version of Umbrella by Rhianna?

They made it a soft acoustic ballad, and it works! It's actually tolerable!

I agree with how TS said different versions are better. A perfect example would be John Lennons "Imagine" performed by A Perfect Circle. It sounds so good.

Astronomy and Whiskey In The Jar by Metallica are both great covers.
I liked Machine Heads cover of Battery too,and that BFMV cover of crazy train on Species UG is interesting.
My favourite cover song I think would be Guns N' Roses Knockin On Heavens Door much better than the original methinks.

Yea I saw BFMV did a cover and I was worried to listen to it. Surprisingly they did a great job of it. The beginning is intense!!
