Donnie Darko Discussion Thread

Postby scarr3d on Thu Oct 25, 2007 11:56 pm

Discuss Donnie Darko, one of the best movies made this century in my opinion.

Have you seen the Director's Cut of Donnie Darko? I got the DVD and it had a Director's Cut on it as well. I liked it much better than the original, it had more scenes in it that helped character building and dialogue.

I wasn't so keen on the Directors cut, it spelled everything out to cleanly for my liking. I preferred the original, as it left it more open to interpretation.

The only bit from the directors cut that should have been included in the original was the fact that Donnies medicine was nothing more than placebos.

However, I do have a copy of the Donnie Darko script book, complete with a transcription of "The Philosophy Of Time Travel"!

Go me!

Lucky you! :)

I preferred the Director's Cut, the scene where they're watching the movie and then he get's asked the question about the rabbits was in that version if I remember, it showed some insight into Donnie's interpretation of how animals are different from humans.

I guess it's all up to opinion though, the original is still the original regardless and was the first version I saw so it'll always be a classic to me :)

I might move these posts into a Donnie Darko Movie Thread...

Yeah, I agree that some of the bits put back in for the directors cut were pretty cool, the rabbits bit especially.

What are some of your other favourite scenes?

I like it at the end, where there's a shot of the time travel channel, and it cuts to Donnie lying in bed laughing.

I came to the conclusion that he's laughing, because he's proved that time travel is possible(see his discussion with Dr. Monitoff earlier in the film).

Then when it shows his body being carried out of the house, and his family stood there with "Mad World" playing...... such a poigniant and beautiful ending, to a truly beautiful and original film!

That's exactly what I reckon he's laughing about too.

And while the song's playing at the end and it's showing everyone, Frank almost sub-consciously touches his right eye (The one he gets shot in).

Some of my other favourite scenes include when his teacher (Drew Barrymore) packing her things and she explains the word 'Cellar Door' to him.

Also the scene where he tells that half-wit teacher that life isn't just about Love and Fear, that it's not that simple.

There are alot of good scenes, it's hard to choose favourites :)

There's actually a mistake in the "Cellar Door" scene.

Drew Barrymore tells him that a famous linguist once said that of all the words in the English Language "Cellar Door" is the most beautiful combination.

She's wrong. It was J.R.R. Tolkein who said that, and he's an author, not a linguist!

The lifeline scene is pretty cool, especialy where that kids mum says "for years I thought it was normal for a 10 year old to wet the bed". I thought that was hilarious!

Have you noticed that it's the same kid who later asks Jim Cunningham "Where can I learn how to fight?" When Jim's visiting the school?

I remember reading that somewhere about 'Cellar Door'.
Do you think that it's the most beautiful combination?

Yeah, I love that scene too, made me laugh quite alot.

And if I remember correctly (It's been a little while since I've watched it, must do so again soon), the advice that Jim gives out is just pathetic, lol.
I didn't pick up on that, I must take more notice of things like that, lol.
I like it when Donnie lays into him (Jim) and puts him in his place, that's a good scene also.

You know, I've never really thought about it before. I guess it does have a really nice cadence to it, and it definitely rolls off the tongue!

I love it when Donnie gets on the mic and starts dishing out the advice:

"Noone knows what they wanna be when they grow up, it takes a little while to figure that out!"

"You want your sister to lsoe weight? Tell her to lay off the twinkies, and get off the couch for field hockey or something"

"And you. Yeah you. You're tired of some jerk flushing your head down the toilet? Lift some weights, or take a karate class, and the next time he tries to do it, you kick him in the balls!"

+1, that's the kind of advice that people need.

And yeah, it does have a nice sound to it, although, there would be alot of other combinations of 2 words like that which would sound nice if put together I reckon, I'll try and think of a few if I can.

Anyways, I'm off to bed for tonight, it's 1 in the morning here and I'm quite tired, lol.

Catch you tomorrow sometime and we'll discuss more :)

nah man, tolkien was definitely a linguist. linguist just means any specialist in language, which tolkien certainly was. he did a lot of research on anglp-saxon languages, and taught at oxford.

but anyway, that movie was always required too much thinking for me. i get enough thinking from school. i watch tv to numb the mind :O

Man Donnie Darko was a hell of a movie. I haven't seen it in like 2 years though.

Must watch it soon.

Yes. Yes you must.

To Kidsthesedays:

Yeah, I suppose you're right really. I've never done all that much looking into J.R.R Tolkien, so I've always considered him an author above anything else, which I guess is the common perception of him. Damn my feeble common mind!
