Epiphone/Gibson Thunderbird Bass

Any one own one? I'm thinking of getting one. Just wanted to know what you cats think of them. I think they sound great. The guy from the first 2 Breeders albums plays one and I think the tone is immaculate.

If you're going to get one, get the GIbson. The Epi version is pathetic.

I just hear bad things about them. I was going to get a bass, and asked a bunch of people if a epi thunderbird would be good, they all said the epi version was bad.

who'd you ask?

i've been shopping for my first bass for about 6 months now...yes i know i'm taking forever but i'm limited on cash and i wanna make sure i get the right one...plus i didn't know how to play a bass at all for like the first 3 of those months other than just lame roote notes...anyway...i really can't tell a significant difference between like $300 basses and $1000 basses...could someone explain the difference to me? with guitars, i can feel the difference in how they play immediately, and usually the differences in tone are pretty obvious...but with basses...i dunno i can't say any one is clearly superior to another (except rick's, they have a very distinctive tone to me and i can pick them out immediately...but there's no way i could afford one anyway)...what am i missing?

Everyone from people at guitarcenter (not sure how trustworthy that is) to people at UG (also, not trustworthy) and also other bass players I know.

I don't notice the difference either, but I've always been told to go with a Squier Vintage modified jazz bass as a first. They're $350 I think.

^No. No, Squire basses. If you're after a Jazz Bass get a Fender standard J Bass. They sound so good and are so much better.

Psssht, Squire.. Not too mention a J bass is a hell of a starting point. You can't go wrong.

Ok, well same with the thunderbird. Epis=shite

Gibson=epic win.

edit: and personally, I would go with a used Music man. I hear good things.

My Epiphone guitar is awesome, so bugger off with the Epi bashing. :)

Music man has a Thunderbird shaped bass? I like the Explorer shaped basses as well, haven't seen one at a store though.

No, music man has it's own shape, sorta p-bassish. But they rule.

And I said epi thunderbirds were shite. I myself have a epi LP custom, and it sounds just as good as the gibsons I played in the store.

I own an Ibanez and so does my step sister, they sound great. More suited for metal in my opinion.

Ibanez are always good for the money. I don't know about basses really but if it's like their (regular?) guitars, than they're good. Schecter I don't know anything about.

SS, you've clearly been brainwashed by the Squire pushing people at the music stores. They are shit. End of discussion. I haven't laid my eyes on one that isn't just crap.

Epiphones tend to vary a lot in quality. You have to play a few and find one you like. I've seen Epiphones I'd rather use then firewood then for playing on, and some that match Gibsons...

If you're lucky try to find a MIJ one, they're allways awesome, MIC or MIK, more varying :) And well, the USA ones I don't have that much experience with.

I never said I thought squier was good, I just said that they always suggest them! Read my other post a little more thoroughly. You guys don't read very well.

And as for Epiphones, you have to look at what it's made with, too. Sometimes LPs use mahogany backs with alder tops. I had to search for a while to find an all mahogany one. It was made in china I believe. It's very nice quality.

what about ltd or dean basses? i found a 5 string dean today for 400 bucks and it had a flamed maple top and emg's in it and it was really comfortable to play. i found a ltd 5 string that was only 275 that played about as nice as the dean, but i dunno what kinda wood it had and i dunno what the pickups were like...

I don't know about either one of them, but if your just starting out with the bass, perhaps you should start with a 4 string.

NO I WANT 5.

sersly tho, i've really been playing for 4 or 5 months on borrowed basses, and that's with a background in guitar, and i know all my theory and such, and i can slap/pop at a fairly decent speed. so i think i can handle a 5. if nothing else, i can just ignore the 5th string for a while till i get used to it. i just don't wanna have to go spend MORE money later to get a 5 string, cuz i know for sure i'll want a 5 string eventually.
