Idols in Politics And Political History

Postby metacarpi on Mon Oct 29, 2007 9:34 pm

Right then, I was trying to think of a relatively safe ploitical thread to open this forum up with, and decided that sharing political idols should be a safe enough topic!

Okay then, who do you admire from politics and why?

I quite admire people like Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels who delivered a political stance that changed the world.

I also must say I have respect for George Bush and Tony Blair.

Before I get booed off stage, just hear me out!

I may not particularly like either of them as people, and haven't always necessarily agreed with the courses of action that they have pursued. However, they have lead their respective countries through difficult times. It's a difficult job to have, and I have the utmost respect for anyone who can step up to the plate a do it.

Right, that's me sorted, what about you lot?

Adolf Hitler.
I don't agree with his views but his ability as an orator, his undeniably genious tactical mind, don't get me wrong, an evil man, but with a political mind above all others I've been made aware of.

True enough, and even if you don't agree with what he did (and to be fair, it's pretty hard to agree with what he did), you can't help but admire a man who had the tenacity and ability to try and bend a world to his will.

As you say, an evil, evil man, but truely something of an inspiration.

Completely agreed

Of course, massive credit to his opponents too, Churchill, Roosevelt (??), to beat such a man required strength (And I shame to admit, I expect luck as well)

Too true.

Churchill was an inspirational leader, to keep a country united through such a period.

It's also due to Churchill and Hitler that one of the greatest technological races happened.

The Germans had U-Boats, so we developed Depth charges.

We developed Sonar, so they developed subs that could go even deeper, and methods of attacking from that depth.

The speed at which these ideas and concepts went from drawing board to implimentation (sp?) is astonishing!

Yeah, and the developments in codes and codebreaking, perhaps not as massively lifechanging, but still a show of frighteningly fast advances

They never would've beaten him if he hadn't gone batshit insane towards the end, I'm afraid. A lot of things points to him having Parkinsons disease, which would eplain some of the illogical choices he made... (Like giving up brittain and heading for Russia, leaving him with two fronts, etc.)

Like you guys, I'm not very fond of him personally, he wasn't a very nice man, but he was very powerful...

Peter Garret - An Australian who used to be in the very successful (Well, over here anyway, lol) band Midnight Oil, a very political person and I believe he's a good bloke.
Maybe a bit too 'green' for my likes though, I reckon he focusses a bit too much about Global Warming and stuff like that more than other issues, but I just like the idea that he used to be in a great band and now he's in politics, lol.

And I probably talk out my butt, as I have no idea when it comes to this kinda stuff, lol.
