What makes this different is it was initially a good relationship (not saying its now bad) and it's become long distance
Long distance initially=A MASSIVE NO-NO
However if it ends up happening as this has it can be massively awkward
The problem is, although you might be able to visit fairly often, it obviously isn't the same, and USUALLY this effects one or both partners into ending the relationship, they don't like the sudden change, decide it's better to not be together and to focus on closer people
If this doesn't happen it can be fine, however ask yourself, do you REALLY (and I mean REALLY) plan on staying with her forever? If not, which is fine and usually the case, it could be better ending it now anyway, as harsh as it seems you've reached a natural deadend, and although jumping the wall is possible, it often isn't the best idea
Seriously consider things, personally I'd still advise against it, however it's understandable in this scenario to 'break' that rule
Although as Anthony says, it's better to assume it might work rather than it won't, it's just again a case of can you see it lasting forever, if not, you're spending time and effort effectively wastefully (don't take offence, I don't mean to say she's a waste etc)
So yeah, I hope that makes sense/helps
