The ONLY Religion Topic!

Postby metacarpi on Fri Oct 26, 2007 1:00 am

So is anybody here religious at all then? If so, what religion to you believe in?

Personally, I'm not a religious person, but I do find it interesting to talk to other people about their faiths, to get an insight into their beliefs and the way they live their lives.

The only part of religion I'm not keen on, is when people try to make you join their religion. There was a guy I knew at school who was always trying to get me to become christian, he would get on at me at least once a week, and it just got really, REALLY annoying!

So anyways, feel free to share your beliefs and stories here!

:D

Just a point, this isn't the only topic, it has its own full forum

And no. Religion seems absurd to me and I'm almost sick of explaining why as if the burder of (dis)proof lies on me, I am openminded and I read into plenty of religions, but not one appeals to me, most just seem corrupt and failures of their original concepts

Yeah I know there's a whole forum for it!

I kinda meant that this is the place for people to discuss the reasons behind their beliefs, no matter what they are, and share their experiences!

And whilst I agree that pretty much every major religion corrupts members of it's faith, there are equally as many people for whom religion enriches their life!

But I guess it's really a case of swings and round-a-bouts. Different strokes for different folks and all that!

i personally find religion to be somewhat unecessary,i feel it is responsible for a great deal of todays problems,it,in ireland in particular, indoctrinated an entire generation of people, convincing them that the close minded and archaic ways of the past were all that was needed in life,it i feel has stunted humanities growth in a huge way, years of intolerance and persecution of those responsible for trying to change the world for the better has undoubtedly had an impact on us as a people, the dark ages for example,a period of around 700 years of virtually no technological or social growth resultant primarilly of religious factors.just think where we would be today without religion, much of the intolerance and hate in the world today would likely not exist,no longer would people be classified and judged by their beliefs(beliefs many people have been brought up with, almost forced to accept).Anyway i could go on for quite a consideral amount of time on this subject but i had better stop before i bore you all to tears.

Oh no, the members of the faith corrupt the religion, mainly because they are already corrupt, but in no way does the religion corrupt the follower

Not necessarily,in fact the islam religion actually states that "all non believers must be converted, even through force"which i think could definetely be considered as religion corrupting the follower.

Nah, that probably was added in by a follower after the initial Qu'ran was written

This is the thing
My point is based on the fact that the bible has been edited thousands of times, as have every religious book, and the interpretations twisted to suit the beliefs of each follower

If that WAS the original part of Islam, then fair enough it may be one of few cases where the Religion seemingly attempts to corrupt the follower, although not ONCE in my life has a member of Islam tried to convert me, and I've known plenty, I know there's the whole terrorism thing but they're all people who've made their own interpretations to suit their needs

yes i know what your saying and im not trying to single out islam, christianity and most of todays major religions for that matter can also be found preaching less than productive morals and ethics.Although most of the more prominent religious articles have undoubtedly been altered over the years i dont believe that they have altered so extensivly so as to an preach entirely different set of values

Ah I do, in some cases quite seriously

But either way, Religion=Corruption to me
Whether it stems from the believer or from the religion, I don't like the concept and nor do I like humanities response to ir

i'm Christian. but i don't debate religion online because it usually demeans to circular logic and immense stupidity on both parts. and flame wars, which i do not enjoy.

i will say, for what it's worth, in my opinion probably 80% (yea, cold hard statistical data) of proclaimed Christians are hypocritical and ignorant in their own beliefs, and it pains me that my God and i must be associated with them because they happen to use the same name.

Yeah man, this isn't UG (well, yet anyway)!

I think I understand what you mean about 80% (FACT!) of proclaimed Christians (and other faiths probably follow a similar trend) being hypocritical and ignorant in their beliefs. I believe that these people use their religion as some way of scoring "holier-than-thou = better-than-thou" brownie points.

I've known a few people who proclaim themselve to be religious, and very tolerant of others, only to later find out that they were actually vindictive little swines, out to further some personal agenda

Well I consider myself a Christian I guess. Although I don't know what particular denomination I am. All I know is I accept Christ as lord and savior, and I love God and will try to live a good life. That's all I need to do really.
